About Us

Ian Geddes and Peter Gerard-Smith

Since Cater and Blumer was established in 1923, we have maintained our commitment to providing quality legal services for our clients. Our firm began with strong associations with both the Griffith and Leeton communities. The founding partners, Rupert Cater and Paul Blumer, maintained offices in both the Leeton and Griffith communities.

Paul continued to practice and run the firm till he died in 1970. It was a remarkable coincidence that Paul's son Garry was born on the 1/07/1923 the day the firm commenced practice and he never thought of doing anything else but law.

The advent of World War II  saw Garry join the R.A.A.F. as a Fighter Pilot with him serving in the Middle East and Italy with Distinction. He was shot down four times, once behind enemy lines, whereby he was initially hidden by Italian partisans from the Germans and he then led a group of Italians over the mountains to safe territory. On 10/03/1945, he was shot down, suffering horrific injuries resulting in him returning to Australia on a hospital ship. After numerous operations and recuperation at the Sydney Repatriation hospital he enrolled at Sydney University, and after graduating and completing his articles and having further operations he returned to Griffith to join the firm on 19/03/1952.

He developed his own style of practicing law, "leave it to me and it will be done" with honesty and integrity, until he retired on 1/05/2006. He has been instrumental in developing the excellent reputation the firm has achieved. The firms current principal is Ian Geddes who joined the firm in 1981 becoming a partner in 1984.

While the firm was centered in Griffith for many years, we were pleased to re-establish a permanent office in Leeton in 1996. In 2000 our Leeton offices merged with the well respected Leeton firm, Maguire & Martin.

Cater and Blumer provides a wide range of legal and non-legal rural counselling services to the local region, with full time offices in Griffith and Leeton, and branch offices in Coleambally and Hillston. We provide legal our services for individuals and families as well as farming enterprises, small and large businesses and corporations.
